Dana Point Concours d'Elegance® Class Judging Guidelines
Originality and authenticity
- Dana Point Concours rewards the preservation of history
- Over-restoration or lack of authenticity brings point deductions
- If in doubt, judges will ask the exhibitor before making deductions
- The judge will always use his/her best judgment
Cars are meant to be driven
- If the car is clean and presentable the judge will not deduct for some evidence of use
Fairness
- If a judge is "involved" with a car in the class he or she is judging (i.e. participated in its restoration, are a previous owner, etc.), they will be reassigned to a different class
- The judge should spend equal time on each car he or she judges
- The judge will be mindful to make consistent deductions across the board
Items that are judged
- Soft tops up or down, as the entrant wishes
- Side curtains are to be with the car, but not necessary to be installed
- A car that cannot be driven through the awards presentation will be disqualified
Items that are not judged
- Trunks
- Tools
- Engines are not started
- Lights, radio, window operators, windshield wipers
Attention to entrants
- A judge will Introduce themselves to each entrant
- Each entrant will be invited to tell the judge a brief overview on the car
- The judge will explain the sequence of his/her judging to the entrant
- The judge will ask the entrant to perform everything that requires touching the car
- The judge will hold judging conversations out of earshot of everyone, including spectators
Scoring
- Chief Class Judge collects team scores and achieves team consensus, reports results to the Dana Point Concours main office
- If a tie results, elegance determines the win
- The previous year's First in Class winners are not eligible for a class win this year, but they are eligible for honorary awards
- Chief Class Judges vote for Best of Show
